Appleby Castle 300821 3709

  • Description

Appleby Castle during a visit on 30 August 2021. Construction of the castle started sometime in the early 12th century, but the main parts date from work around 1170, when the great tower or keep known as Caesar's Tower was erected. The castle came into the hands of the Clifford family in 1264 and they did much to restore, enhance and update in the following four centuries. Much credit goes to Lady Anne Clifford who, amongst many other great works here and elsewhere, in 1651-1653 had the castle substantially restored after destruction at the hands of Cromwell in the aftermath of the Civil War. Most of the main buildings (not the keep) are used as an hotel and there are also three self-catering cottages inside the inner gateway.
