Text Appearing Before Image: Trunk Type.—This type (Figs. 1 and 2), the inventionof Mr. Robert Ropner, of Messrs. Ropner & Sons, Limited,Stockton-on-Tees, is an ordinary single-deck steamer, with asquare trunk or top extending between the forecastle and bridge VAEIOUS TYPES OF COAL CAEGO-STEAMEES. 257 and between the bridge and poop. In this type the height ofthe trunk is the height of the poop and forecastle, and forms acontinuous erection between these points, the top of the trunkforming a deck at a height of about 7 feet above the main deck,This trunk may be about 60 per cent, of the breadth of the vessel.It is claimed for this type of vessel that it has all theadvantages of a single-decker, when designed clear of all hold-beams, side-stringers, quarter-stanchions, etc.; and also thatthe centre-line pillars are portable, and can be entirely removedwhilst carrying timber and other bulky cargoes. Thehold was not divided in any way, and there was practically onlyone hatchway, running (he complete length of the hold. Priestman of Sunderland, and Messrs. G\ M. Harroway andW. & T. Dixon of Middlesbrough.
