Clarghyll Colliery

  • Description

Clarghyll was a private drift mine near Ayle in Cumbria. It appears to have opened around 1936, closing in 2000. I cannot now remember how we found it, perhaps someone at nearby Ayle Colliery told us about the place. I do remember us trying to reach it along a track that did not take kindly to my friends Suzuki 750 and had us off half way down. August 1979 This is the view towards the waste tippler and coal storage hopper. Pentax SP1000/50mm Ilford FP4 rated @ 200 ASA
