  • Description

Hilary Gould, Rebecca Pullen, Simon Taylor, H Winton. Hisoroic England. 2021. ISSN 2059-4453 (Online). "....Appleby has a rich heritage as a market town and borough planted by Ranulf le Meschin (de Briquessart) early in the 12th century, while the settlement at Bongate predates the Norman Conquest. Both the Castle and St Lawrence’s church were in existence by 1120 and were linked by Boroughgate, the main street and market place which was lined with burgage plots developed as a result of the Norman expansion. Prior to this, existing inhabitation seems to have been confined to the older settlement at Bongate, which was probably established by the mid-10th century...."
