Description
A shot from Braystones village pulls together a few well known local sights. In the foreground is Braystones Tower. It was erected in June1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. In 1920 it also became a First World War memorial. The 3-stage tower was formerly floored but is now gutted. A commemorative tablet records the names of local worthies present at its unveiling whilst another tablet records the names of those men of Braystones who served in the Great War. Right middle distance we see the "Golf Ball", the Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor. The WAGR was a prototype for the UK's second generation of nuclear reactors. Completed in 1962 it was shut down in 1981. It is now part of a pilot project to demonstrate techniques for safely decommissioning a nuclear reactor. To the rear is Pile No.1, one of Windscale's two reactor piles. It was within this pile that the 1957 fire occurred, destroying the reactor core and releasing caesium-137 & iodine-131 into the atmosphere. Pile No.2 has been decomissioned and demolished but this pile is still only part way through the decomissioning process. -
