The Market-Hull at Hexham is of an irregular figure, averaging fifty yards in length,by about thirty in breadth. On the south side is the leather and poultry market, withpiazzas in front, and behind are stalls for the butchers. A market is held here everyTuesday, when the town is plentifully supplied with corn, provisions, &c, and there is alsoan inferior market on Saturday. From the end of February to Midsummer, and from Octoberto Christmas, an extensive cattle market is held every alternate Tuesday. Vast quantities of vegetables are sent from Hexham to the Newcastle markets. Thistrade has suffered materially from the gardeners who reside near the sea; an injurywhich would probably be effectually removed by the construction of a rail-road, for theremoval of produce from the inland parts of the county. The annual sales in theHexham market average four thousand quarters of wheat, one thousand quarters Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work. -
