A short time previous to the period just referred to, theScots had entered Northumberland under the command of earls Douglas, Murray, andMarch ; and after burning the country as far as Brancepeth Castle, they returned north-ward, laden with plunder. In their way back they lay three days before Newcastle, whenmuch skirmishing ensued between them and the English ; and Sir Henry Percy lost hispennon in an encounter with Douglas, who boasted he would fix it upon his castle ofDalkeith. The morning after this occurrence,— The Douglas turnyd hym horaewarde agayne,For soth withowghten naye,He took his logeynge at OtterborneUpon a Wedynsday. The Scots had laboured hard during the day, to reduce the castle, and while they wereat supper, and some were gone to sleep, the English, advancing from Newcastle, enteredtheir camp with the cry, Percy !
