Appleby Bridge

  • Description

"The double-arched bridge over the River Eden dates from 1889. The earlier bridge had a gatehouse at one end to regulate the passage of people and goods and to collect tolls. There was also a chantry chapel here where a priest would pray for your safe passage. During the annual Appleby Fair which is held here every June, travellers wash their horses in the river at this spot." Photo by Marathon, 2018.
