Appleby Castle: bailey

  • Description

"The tour guide explained that the current level of the bailey is several feet above where it would have been in Norman times. The wellhead in the centre is an artificial one, the original well being in a more secure place; an older view from the keep [[1176541]] shows the pond that previously occupied the spot. [[1505585]] shows the keep covered in ivy in 2003, which has now been removed." Photo by Stephen Craven, 2016.
