"It's back in bloom - Tyneside's famous shoe tree is sprouting again.....For years, pairs of shoes, boots, and trainers have been thrown into the branches of the huge tree in Armstrong Park, Heaton, Newcastle. Locals have various theories as to where the tradition came from, but it is believed to have been started by pupils celebrating the end of exams...."
