Summerhill Park

  • Description

"This is a rather surprising green oasis on the western side of Newcastle town centre, in the middle of a very built up area. The Summerhill area was built in the early-mid 19th century as superior housing away from the overcrowded town centre of Newcastle. Although the houses do form a square around the park, this was not originally planned that way. The park occupies what were market gardens when the streets were originally laid out, and didn't become a public park until 1935, for King George V's silver jubilee. The big tower block being erected in the background is Hadrian's Tower, further down Westgate Road." Photo by Robert Graham, 2019.
