    also known as South Durham Colliery...."Here is Eldon Colliery, the property of the South Durham Coal Co., working the "Brockwell" seam, 5 ft. 3 in. to 6 ft. thick, at a depth of 154 fathoms, and the "Harvey," 3 ft. 8 in. to 4 ft., at a depth of 106 fathoms. This seam contains a band varying from 2 to 12 inches. There are three shafts, two for drawing coals and one for ventilation. The output amounts to about 1500 tons per day, giving employment to 1000 men and boys. There are also coke ovens, which convert about 2000 tons of coal into coke per week..."
