In conclusion, it has been proved in Germany that hydraulics owing can claim many advantages over hand stowing, and,at the same time, the cost is not prohibitive, as an averagecost would appear to be 6d. to Td. per ton in mines wherematerial is easily got, and slightly dearer where the materialis more difficult to obtain, as at Shamrock I. and II. colliery, where the cost per ton for this stowing is well above the average. It might be adopted in some mines in England with advantage, and it would be especially interesting to know how collieriesworking undersea coal and those near towns would be affectedby the application of this method. Forster) said that the subject ofthe paper was probably becoming of increased importance, although he did not think that the conditions (like those of theSt. Etienne coal-field) were applicable to their own district. The system, however, was beginning to be introduced into Eng-land. There was an iron-ore mine at Cleator Moor, in WestCumberland, which was, at present, being partly worked on thesystem described, sand being run into the old workings, so as toget out the pillars of ore which had been left under buildings;and he thought that, if the system proved a success, a visit tothe mine at some future date might be of interest. Eventuallyit might be adopted in coal-mines where there was a lot of looserefuse, which could be stowed underground at a comparativelylow cost. The cost of hydraulic stowing Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work. -
