THE ANCIENT CROSS OF GREYSTOKE

  • Description

Greystoke is a very attractive Cumbrian village a few miles from Penrith and familiar to all cyclists on the C2C route or like me today; simply taking the safer and pleasant route from Keswick avoiding the hazards of speedsters on the A66. The 14th. Baron Greystoke built the first castle here dating from the 1300's, its tower performing the office of pele tower against their near neighbours, Scotsmen of the period being possessed of a rather hazy understanding of property law. The cross dates early in the 16th. century.
