CP enlarged by absorbing Renwick and Staffield CPs 1934....farming; charter for market and fair granted 1201: in 17th century weekly market held on Thursdays and fair around Whitsuntide; market had ceased by mid-19th century. Mineral extraction on Haresceugh Fell: quarrying and lime-burning; coal mining from 1746 to mid-19th century; lead mining from later 18th century; mine reopened for barytes extraction 1915...."
