Memorial to the Fusiliers
-
Description
"The top two lines of the inscription read: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS, NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICERS & MEN of the 6TH TERRIORIAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR" The third line (to the left) says: "To the Memory of All Ranks of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers Who Gave Their Lives 1919-1968" and to the right: "To the Memory of All Ranks of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Who Gave Their Lives since its Formation in 1968" The pillar is inscribed: "43rd Bn Royal Tank Regt 1939-1945" The monument, with its statue of St George and the defeated dragon and its inscriptions says much of duty and sacrifice. This was a stormy day: before taking the photograph, I collected up and replaced the poppy wreaths scattered by the gale .... and I removed from the memorial into the nearby bin the carelessly-discarded barley-wine bottles, which say much of another side of life."
