In thebishopric within twenty years five hundred ploughs have been laididle, the poor are multiplied, and if corn were not imported at greatcost from foreign countries, even from the queens enemies, manythousands who might have it growing at their own doors wouldperish for bread. Five hundred horses are some days at Newcastle,though it and Gateshead are dangerously infected ; yet without thishelp no man can express the misery that would ensue. Later on thedean repeats his statement about the decay of tillage, and the fetch-ing of corn from Newcastle, whereby the plague is spread in thenorthern counties, adding, thus the money goes, and the peoplecan neither pay their landlords, nor store their ground. URTHER information respecting the great municipalcontroversy in Newcastle is afforded by a letter andenclosure which Henry Sanderson, the queenscustomer, forwards on this date to lord Burghley :— Isend you a letter from the bishop of Durhams receiver.I also send that part of our grievances which were exhibited to thecouncil of York, and some to the lord keeper, without any greatdenial by the defendants.
