    "Brougham Castle is a mediæval building about 2 miles to the south-east of Penrith at the site, near the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther, which had earlier been chosen by the Romans for a fort called Brocavum. The castle is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, along with the fort, as "Brougham Roman fort and Brougham Castle"(Historic England List entry Number: 1007186 https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1007186 ). The castle was founded by Robert de Vieuxpont in the early 13th century. It was bequeathed to the Ministry of Works in the 1930s and is today maintained by its successor, English Heritage."
