Description
"Also known as simply "The Ship" or the "Ship Inn", this is a former 17th Century coaching inn on the Carlisle - Workington road. Its moment of fame came in 1857 when Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins stayed for a night. While very remote, it did not escape the clutches of the Carlisle State Management Scheme, being under State ownership from October 1918 until sold for £7,600 on 23 May 1973. Still trading.
