"The remains of a medieval village survive as earthworks on Buteland Fell. Buteland is first mentioned in documents in the 13th century when Richard of Buteland held the manor. The village remains include a group of building foundations and enclosures which all lie within an oval banked enclosure with ridge and furrow cultivation around the north and west sides....." -
