Mr. Barkus describes its appearance onbeing- first approached from the east as nearly vertical, and consisting- ofa mass of rounded worn stones, composed of mountain limestone, mill-stone grit, and the shales, ironstone, and sandstones of the Coal-measures,with rare instances of the older rocks, and without any symptoms ofveg-etable remains, or shells, or bones. In the same line of section at the Bewicke-main Pit, the thickness ofclay and sand is 125 feet, and the sinking operations were rendered exceed-ingly difficult by the swelling and motion of the clay, sand, and water insinking*.
