Description: This is a photograph of two young female patients on the verandah at Stannington Sanatorium, Stannington, Northumberland. Date: c.1946 The image was collected via a collaborative project with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The project "Voices of Stannington Sanatorium" collected oral memories of former patients and staff who were resident in the Sanatorium in the period prior to the introduction of antibiotics (about 1950). The hospital was the first purpose-built children’s TB sanatorium in the country and opened in 1907. Poverty was recognised as a major contributing factor to TB and at Stannington, children from the cramped housing and gritty industrial environment of Tyneside and Northumberland were able to escape from this environment. Fresh air, exercise and good nutrition were a major part of the treatment, but the sanatorium also employed the latest medical techniques of the time.
