Former Pit-head Baths, Clara Vale
-
Description
"Although not itself a listed building, it is the only surviving example of a pithead baths in Gateshead and forms an integral part of the Clara Vale Conservation Area. It was constructed in 1959, eight years before the mine closed in 1967. Although it had several uses since then, it was finally vacated in 2003 and has deteriorated considerably as a result of several acts of vandalism and arson [[2213885]] In the light of local complaints, Gateshead Council were seeking permission in July 2010 to issue a Section 215 Notice which will require the landowner to improve the condition of the building by implementing a comprehensive scheme of remedial works. However, in the event that a successful conversion of the building cannot be secured, the Notice allows for demolition and reseeding of the site for grass. The time limit for action is 12 months from issue of the Notice. Future demolition appears more than likely.
