Text Appearing Before Image: still living in 1770, we may believethat she reached a good old age. The other lady was possiblyMrs. Spanton—Mrs. Gilpin must have been alive, and presum-ably resident at Whitehaven, so late as 5th July, 1770, sinceAndrew Hudleston, writing to his brother Curwen, urges thathe should make certain enquiries from that lady. It seems * 1754, March 25. Articles of agreement between Mary Gilpin of White-haven, widow, Sarah Dove of Newcastle-on-Tyne, spinster, datighter of thesaid Mary Gilpiu by John Dove, late of London, grocer, her former hiisband,Eev. Curwen Hudleston of Whitehaven, clerk, and Wilfrid Hudleston, gentle-man, an infant (aged 8^ years), son of Eev. Curwen Hudleston by Eleanor hiswife, deceased, another daughter of Mary Gilpin and John Dove (1), andEalph Clark of North Shields (2), concerning the keeping in repair of a hedgeon the west side of a lane leading from Whitley to Cullercoats. + The Hudlestons of Whitehaven, etc, Trans. Cumherland and Westmore-land Ant. Soc, 1891. Text Appearing After Image: REV. CURWEN HUDLESTON, 45 probable that her death took place between the above date andMay, 1774, when there are admittances at Whitley in trust forthe Hev. Wilfrid Iludleston. The Hudlestons of Whitehaven. So far as the family deeds inform us, there is a gap between1754 and 1770, when Curwen Hudleston and his brother Andrew,the squire of Hutton John, began to move in the matter of theproposed sale of the Dove estate at Cullercoats to the Duke ofNorthumberland. This is a curious incident in the history ofthe Dove property, and the particulars are set forth at somelength in Tomlinsons History of Cullercoats, etc.* The corres-pondence on this subject is reinforced by a letter from SamuelLowthion to Mr. Andrew Hudleston, senior, of Hutton John,bearing the Newcastle postmark, and apparently dated April,1770. He says :— I am still in the number of the Friends.
