Text Appearing Before Image: hnDove II. of Wapping was something more than a grocer. We may fairly believe that he might be regarded as a Balticmerchant as well as active in retail trade he had on the banksof the Thames. For this reason it is greatly to be regretted thatthe leading incidents of his career subsequent to his marriageare for the most part unknown. In Mr. Stirlings two letters weobtain an interesting though momentary peep into the earlystages of an important and profitable trade, which was destined toexpand immensely in later times. These same two letters, pre-served by accident, as it were, also enable us to catch a glimpseof John Dove, though only by reflex light, and thus to make aguess at a life which was destined to an early close. The date ofhis death is unknown and can only be a matter of inference, asthe family papers are very defective for several decades aboutthis period. Indeed, we must go outside the family papers for informa-tion on this point. The flrst clear intimation I have at present Text Appearing After Image: ELEANOR DOVE. 39 that John Uove II. was dead is to be fouud in extracts from thewill of Robert Southern, January 14th, 1784/5,* where the fol-lowing passage occurs:— xlll that my messuage and dwellinghouses or tenements scituate in Culercoats aforesaid and now inmy own possession and adjoining to a parcell of ground belongingto Mrs. Giipin on the west and on the street or waggon-way on theeast. Mrs. Gilpin was no other than Mrs. John Dove {neeHudson), who was now profiting by the settlement of 1710.There can be no doubt then that John Dove II. had died previousto 1734, since his widow had already married again. AVe haveseen from his signature that he was alive on the 17th October,1718. Hence the limit lies between the years 1718 and 1734,a period of Ki years, which is certainly wide enough. AVe ob-tain some inkling of the probable date from a letter by AndrewHudleston, of Hutton John, to the Duke of Northumberland in1770, where the writer refers to the death of John Dove fortyyears Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work. -
