Text Appearing Before Image: tress and shear which may be developedin any portion of the work. From the ground plan it v\^ill be seen that near the centre ofthe east front, on the ground floor, is the principal entrance tothe building, leading through a lobby to the entrance hall andstaircase. To the right on entering is the Aquarium, and tothe left, the office and private aquarium. The Aquarium is 30 feet by 23 feet (for view of this see oppositep. 50) and ranged outside of this are eleven fish tanks of varyingsizes projecting beyond the main walls of the building, so as tosecure direct vertical light and to obviate shadows. In thecentre of the Aquarium is a spacious floor tank or pool, witha rockery and fountain, and rock work is intended to be rangedround this pool to break up the rigid lines of the margin. Agallery, supported on brackets, runs round three sides of theAquarium, giving access to the tanks for the purposes of feed-ing, supervision, etc., and at the same time acting as a screen J— 1 ? The private aquarium is 52 feet G inches by oO feet (for view ofthis see opposite p. 72), and has three double rows of aquariadivided into thirty-eight tanks, for the storing of materials forworkers, for experiments, hatching and the like; and along theeast and south w\alls is a concrete table or bench for experiments,and for glass aquaria. On the first floor is a lecture room, 23 feet by 18 feet 9inches (for view of this see opposite }).
