Text Appearing Before Image: also on plants. Wallis himself gave an account of the topography of thecounty, of the minerals and fossils which were known to him, ofthe trees and plants, and of the animals. Amongst the fishes he mentioned certain Cetaceans which had wandered to thecoast, and he stated that bottle-nose whales were sometimesobserved in great numbers. Sixty-three of them came inshore at Shorestone, 29th July, 1734. The porpoise was, asit is nowadays, the common species. He gave a list of some28 sea fish and 11 fresh Avater fish, accompanied by interestingnotes relating to each. The crab and lobster were similarlydescribed, the common and heart urchins, and a catalogue ofthe Mollusca was added. In one or two cases observations wererecorded wath regard to the food of the fish. The year 1793 saw the birth of the Literary and Philosophi-cal Society* of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and the beginning in con- * Dr. E. Spence Watson, The History of the Literary and rhilosoj^hiealSociety of Newcastle-wpon-Tyne, 1897. Text Appearing After Image: nexion therewith of a period of remarkable progress in NaturalHistory and in educational activities in general. The MS.papers relating to the early meetings preserved in the SocietysLibrary show that Marine Zoology was not neglected. On 8thApril, 1794, a communication from Ralph Beilby—the engraverto whom Thomas Bewick was apprenticed, and who afterwardsreceived Bewick into partnership*—was read, giving a descrip-tion with a drawing of an uncommon fish taken up dead nearNewbiggin. The drawing is not very satisfactory, but therecan be little doubt that the fish was a Banks Oar Fish {Regale-ciis banJcsii). The Rev. W. Turner, who took a prominent partin the formation of the Society, contributed a paper on Lejyasanatifera, a stalked barnacle which is still frequently cast ashoreon floating timber and on weed. An interesting paper by theRev. W. Salvin on Ocean Currents gave an account of what wasknown at that period on Hydrography.
