Preston Colliery (closed 1929)

Preston Colliery was located in Preston township, North Shields, near Billy Mill. There had been small scale coal mining in the area for centuries. A Preston Colliery was recorded in the 1860s, possibly a different entity to the Preston Colliery recorded in the 1880s, at which time the colliery was owned by the Preston Coal Co. By the 1910s it was owned by U.A. Ritson & Sons Ltd. Its peak level of employment was in 1923, when there were 1,254 working at the colliery (1,037 below ground and 217 above ground).[1] The colliery was closed by 1929 and was demolished in the early 1930s. Preston Colliery War Memorial is located in Preston Cemetery.
