Pontop and South Shields Railway
The Pontop and South Shields Railway was incorporated by Act of Parliament on 23 May 1842. The new company took over the Leadgate to South Shields section of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway, which had run into financial difficulties. In 1844 the company opened the section of line between Boldon and Brockley Whins with the Brandling Junction Railway. In 1846 the Pontop and South Shields Railway was bought by the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway, which soon after was renamed the York and Newcastle Railway, later called the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and then the North Eastern Railway.
