Plenmeller Opencast Mine (1991 - 2002)

Plenmeller Opencast Mine was a 458 hectare site on Plenmeller Common, to the south-east of the village of Plenmeller in Northumberland. The opencast mine was opened by John Northand CBE, Deputy Chairman of the British Coal Corporation, on the 19th of September 1991.[1] By the time the site was completed in May 2002 there had been 1.91 million tonnes of coal extracted.[2]
