Pinfold, Dalton-in-Furness
There is a notable pinfold in Dalton-in-Furness, located on Goose Green, at it's junction with Abbey Road. It is a circular stone walled area with an opening in it's west side with limestone gatepost and iron gate. Pinfolds were used to impound stray animals, until their owner came to collect them on payment of a fine to the “pinder”. They were once common in towns and villages around the country but this one at Dalton is a particularly well preserved example. It is not known precisely when it was built, but it is shown on Merryweather's town plan of Dalton, surveyed in 1825.[1] A pinder in Dalton was documented by Sir Henry Slingsby in 1643, though it isn't known if it is the same one.[2] The pinfold is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
