Outgate, Cumbria

Outgate is a hamlet in Cumbria, located about 1 mile north of the village Hawkshead and 3 miles south-west of Ambleside. There are several 18th century buildings in the hamlet, including the Outgate Inn (an inn since the mid-19th century). A reading room was built here in 1906 (converted to housing early 21st century). There are several listed buildings in Outgate, including the old post office. There is also a 19th century water pump and a 1935 'K6' telephone box (both listed on the National Heritage List for England). Historically, Outgate was in Lancashire, but was made part of the newly formed county of Cumbria when it was established in 1974. Today, Outgate is part of Hawkshead Civil Parish and is in the Westmorland & Furness unitary authority area.
