Oulton, Cumbria

Ordnance Survey Revised: 1899, Published: 1901. Cumberland Sheet XXIX.NW [CC-BY (NLS)]

Oulton is a village in Cumbria, located about 1 mile north of Wigton and 9 miles south-west of Carlisle. Historically, the wider area around Oulton formed a township in the ancient parish of Wigton in Cumberland. A workhouse was built for the township in 1828, and was later used by the Wigton Poor Law Union, when the Union was formed in 1836, prior to the building of a new Union workhouse, which opened in Wigton in 1842. In 1866, following the Poor Law Amendment Act, Oulton became a civil parish. The OS map of 1901, shows within Oulton, a school, post office, Tabor Chapel (Baptist/non-conformist), a public house (the Greyhound), along with Oulton Hall, Oulton Grange, and Oulton House. The original Baptist chapel was erected in 1722; this was rebuilt in 1832 and was later used as Primitive Methodist chapel. A School House had been established by 1847, and was replaced by a new Church of England school in 1875. Oulton Parish Institute was built in 1924 (now the Village Hall). Oulton remained a civil parish until 1934, and since then has been part of Woodside Civil Parish. The chapel had closed by 1984 and the school closed in 1992. Today, Oulton Village Hall is run by volunteers (Registered Charity #522771). Chapel House, here, dates from the mid 18th Century and is a Grade II listed building.
