Old Swimming Baths, Byker

The former public swimming baths and wash house on Shipley Street in Byker were built in 1907. The building was incorporated into the sheltering perimeter block of the Byker Estate, which was developed in the early 1970s by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor. The perimeter block shelters the estate from traffic noise and creates a micro-climate with low-rise housing in its lee. The building is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England. The old Shipley Baths are now an indoor climbing venue run by Climb Newcastle.
