Old Milestone near the Sun Inn, Wackerfield


By the junction of the A688 and Esperley Lane at Wackerfield is a late 18th century milestone. The milestone is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. From 1748 to 1870, the Bowes and Sunderland Bridge Turnpike Trust ran a toll road from Bowes to Sunderland Bridge. The road, via Barnard Castle, Staindrop and Bishop Auckland, now forms part of the route of the A67 and A688.
