Old Killingworth

My mam was born in 1983 an has always lived in Killingworth, with her family so it is very special to her. As you can imagine it looked very different then!

My mam has told me that when she was growing up, alot of the new modern houses were big, tall, ugly flats called the Killingworth towers, they were awful, which is why they got pulled down to make the lovely estates that are there now. There was also alot of wasteland around, that wasnt getting used but now it is turned into the car-park attached to the Killingworth centre.

Before the new Killingworth centre was built, there was shops which were also called the Killingworth centre but they were very different and they werent in a posh new centre! My mam can remember a newsagents, a bank, a fruit and veg shop and a pub called Mr Browns. Unfortunatley Mr Browns caught fire and thats when most of the shops closed down.
