Old Grammar School building, Kirkby Lonsdale


The old Queen Elizabeth Grammar School buiding is located on Biggins Road in Kirkby Lonsdale. It was built in 1848 after the school had moved here from Mill Brow. The old schoolroom was converted into a library in the mid-20th century; it is still in use by todays Queen Elizabeth School as "Lab. 1". The building has stone panels, brought from the previous building on Mill Brow inscribed "HEN: WILSON FUNDATOR ANO DM0 1628" and "FREE GRAMMAR SCHOOL". The building has had many alterations over the years. There are separate Girls' and Boys' entrances at the gable ends (the Girls' Entrance dated 1903). . It is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
