Rose and Crown Obelisk, St Mary's Church

In the early hours of 6th December 1820 a fire took hold at the Rose and Crown in Kirkby Lonsdale. The blaze took the lives of 5 maids; Agnes Nicholson, Hannah Armstrong, Bella Cornthwaite and Agnes Waller who worked at the inn, and their friend, Alice Clarke, who had been visiting after previously working there. The victims, who had been sleeping in the attic, were aged 17 to 31.
