North Shields Transport Hub and Town Square
The Transport Hub for North Shields was opened on the 2nd September 2023, bringing buses, the Metro, taxis and cycling infrastructure together in the same place. The £13m Transport Hub and Town Square was funded through the Transforming Cities Fund via a collaboration between Transport North East, the North of Tyne Combined Authority, and North Tyneside Council. The new town square, next to the hub, was named Thomas Brown Square on the 15th of March, 2024. This is in honour of Thomas Brown, a young man from North Shields, who helped shorten the Second World War by capturing Enigma code books from a sinking German U-boat. This was when he was serving on the HMS Petard in the Mediterranean in October 1942. Thomas Brown was posthumously awarded the George Medal in 1945.
