No. 6, Bigg Market

No. 6, Bigg Market, Newcastle, was originally built as a three storey house in the mid to late 18th century. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The building has hosted a variety of shops and restaurants over the years. The upper floors were home to the Rupali restaurant for 32 years, which gained notoriety for serving the world's hottest Indian dish named "Curry Hell" devised by owner Abdul Latif, which was acknowledged by Guinness World Records in 1987. The Rupali closed in December 2014. The upper floors later hosted the Taj Palace; it now (2024) hosts Karma Kitchen, an Indian vegan restaurant. The lower floor has also hosted a variety of eateries over time, including Simply Greek, Little Saigon, The Gentleman, and more recently part of Hibou Blanc.
