No 5. Palace Street East

No 5., Palace Street East in Berwick upon Tweed is a large 3 storey house built in 1754. The building became the centre of a Grammar School, established in 1867. The school relocated in 1939, after which the building was used as an adult training and community centre, but this closed in 2015, following the re-location of Council services to other buildings within the town. The building was disused for many years. In 2021, an archaeological and cultural assessment of the building was undertaken, prior to refurbishment and partial redevelopment as part of the Berwick Youth Project, for starter and transition housing. Then in September 2024, following escalating costs, the charity sold the building to a private developer. The building is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England and is located within the Berwick upon Tweed Conservation Area. The garden wall, with spiral volutes, is separately Grade II listed.
