Muncaster Parish War Memorial

The war memorial for Muncaster Parish is located by the juction of Main Street (east of Ravensglass) with the A595 road. Built in Lakeland granite, the memorial was designed by the renowned architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944). It was built to commemorate 14 local servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was unveiled on the 24th September 1922 by Mrs Cowan from Ravenglass, who had lost three sons in the war, and a daughter to typhoid. The service was also attended by Major General Earl of Erroll, and Revd H Partridge. Later, the names of 7 men lost in the Second World War were added to the memorial. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
