Middlesbrough Little Theatre was opened on 22nd October 1957 by Sir John Gielgud. However, its history goes back to the1920s when the Middlesbrough Opera House was closed to be converted to the Gaumont cinema. Leah Bateman of the Macdona Players made an appeal to keep stage alive. Following a number of performances over the following years the Middlesbrough Little Theatre Society was formed in 1930; eventually funds were raised to build todays theatre (source: Middlesbrough Theatre).
