Merci Beaucoup & No. 2 Cottage
'Merci Beaucoup' and No. 2 are cottages adjacent to the North Farmhouse at Houghton in Northumberland, built in 1815.[1] During the First World War, Sir James Knott, of Close House, furnished the cottage and let it to the wives and family of wounded soldiers who were convalescing at nearby Holyn Hall. At the end of the war he held a competition to name the cottage and the winner received £1.[2] The winning name was inscribed on a lintel above the door. 'Merci Beaucoup' and No. 2 are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
