Marine Park

North Marine Park, South Marine Park, and Bents Park are 3 adjacent parks in South Shields. They were developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, on reclaimed land. In 1869, a 5 acre site of a former brickyard and dump was developed into a children's recreation ground, including a pond for sailing model boats. In 1875, the park was extended northwards, incorporating 18.5 acres of ballast hills (ships arriving on the Tyne came with sand and stone ballast, which was dumped, before loading them with coal and other cargos). Work on the new North Marine Park began in 1883; Matthew Hall (Borough Engineer and Surveyor) incorporated the existing recreation area into his design for the park. South Marine Park was completed in 1890 at a cost of £20,000. The Marine Parks were opened on the 25th of June 1890. The parks are listed on the National Heritage List for England.
