Lowsay Farm
Lowsay is a farm in Cumbria, located about 2½ miles south of Siloth and 2 miles north-east of the village of Mawbray. The farmhouse dates from the early 19th century and is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. Lowsay is part of Holme St Cuthbert Civil Parish and is within the Cumberland Council area. Companies House (accessed Jan 2026), lists Messers Taylor Ltd at Lowsay Farm, incorporated 2006; as I.W. Taylor on Google Maps (Jan 2026).
Historic maps show that the current farmhouse was built sometime between 1814 and 1840, replacing an earlier house here. Subsequent Tithe and Ordnance Survey maps indicate that the footprint of the house remain unchanged to the present day.
Lowsey is first documented in 1538 in a survey of the lands belonging to Holme Cultram Abbey, after its dissolution. At that time, it was a single customary tenement, occupied by John Leithes and his mother. The tenancy later passed through the Leithe and Barwise families, and in 1793 it passed to Ann Richmond. In 1840, the tenancy was held by Ann Richmond Asbridge, and the Richmond family held the tenancy into the early-20th century.
