Leadgate, West Allen
Leadgate Farm is located on Leadgate Bank (road) to the north-east of Ninebanks in Northumberland. It is one of many locations with the placename of Leadgate, related to the lead mining in the area. Leadgate here was part of the grieveship of Low West Allen in the ancient parish of Allendale. Whellan's 1855 directory of Northumberland lists Robert Robinson as shopkeeper at Leadgate in Low West Allen.[1] Today, Leadgate is part of West Allen Civil Parish. There was an earlier settlement here in the prehistoric of Roman period.[2] There are also hollow ways (worn sunken pathways) by Leadgate Bank, dating from the medieval or early post-medieval period.
