Kyo Township, 1848


KYO, a township, in the parish and union of Lanchester, W. division of Chester ward, N. division of the county of Durham, 10½ miles (N.W.) from Durham; containing 965 inhabitants. It was anciently the estate of the Birtley family, who held it by the service of a rose, of the master of St. Edmund's hospital in Gateshead. The township comprises 1,230 acres, and is near the road from Lanchester to Whickham.
