John Hunter Rutherford (1826-1890)


Dr. John Hunter Rutherford (1826-1890) was an evangelical preacher. He established Bath Lane School in Newcastle, founded on 29th June 1870. He also established the School of Science and Art in 1877 with branch schools in Shieldfield, Heaton, Gateshead and Byker. After his death Rutherford Memorial College ( a forerunner to Newcastle College and Northumbria University) was established in his honour in 1892. Also in his honour a Memorial Fountain was built in 1894 and is a prominent feature of the Bigg Market.
