HMS Newcastle (launched 1936)

This was the seventh ship to be named HMS Newcastle. It was built at the High Walker shipyard by Vickers Armstrong and John Brown & Co. The ship was launched on the 23rd January 1936 by the Duchess of Northumberland. Following sea trials, the ship was commissioned by the Royal Navy in March 1937. A silver bell was presented to the ship by the City of Newcastle. HMS Newcastle served during the Second World War and later in the Korean War. It was refitted in 1945 and again in 1950, before eventually being decommissioned in 1959.
